Here’s the continuation of our DIY Kitchen Remodel Part One:
I had originally wanted to go with an apron sink but when I saw the $1000 plus price tag there was no way we could afford it. Jose is the dishwasher in the family so I checked with him to see what he would prefer in a sink. He elected to go with a single bowl self-rimming sink.I found a great deal on http://www.faucets.com/.We (I) picked the American Standard Chandler sink that was 10” deep. Our previous sink was only 6” deep so you can imagine how quickly the dishes pilled up, especially with me constantly licking glasses as Jose likes to say. The total bill including shipping was $200.
The flooring proved tricky. My floor budget was $200 bucks as I had planned to buy laminate flooring from Lumber Liquidators.I had only viewed it online so I was disappointed when I went and saw the product. However, they did have some samples of cork flooring that I thought might work. One concern was that we would have to polyurethane it once it was installed.I wanted easy and cheap. After looking I found that floating click cork panels ranged from $6 – $8 a square foot, yet after much searching I found exactly what I needed at http://www.ifloors.com/.Not only was it $2.29 a square foot it was already coated with polyurethane.I lucked out as one my dear friends lives near one of their stores inSeattle and was able to deliver it to me for free when she came down for the holidays. Total cost for flooring and under layment $350.
When it came to cabinet hardware I had my heart set on old fashion “cup” pulls. After many a trip to Lowes/Home Depot I saw the price for these babies at $15 bucks.I found the same product on http://www.knobs4less.com/ for $3.75 each.
Last but not least for our kitchen remodel, I needed to buy a screen that would hide our washer and dryer but yet still compliment all the upgrades. I wanted to buy some sliding shoji doors for $600 but when we went with the cabinets from Jose’s uncle I had to slash the costs of other items. I found some great Paper Rattan Woven Sliding Blinds from http://www.tatamiroom.com/.They cost $120 plus shipping.I was just flipping through the Gaiam catalog I received and I noticed they were selling what looks like the same product for $159 and marketing them as eco chic.
