Thrifty 201: Tightfisted Money Tips I Should have kept from College

Last but certainly not least.

Pay with Cash:

The small credit union that I used during college didn’t issue debit cards until my senior year so I was “stuck” using cash. I sure kept an eye on my money as I wasn’t going to have anymore once the last dollar was spent.

When I got my first debt card it was really easy for me to make a purchase and blank out on how much I spent. I wasted a lot of money on overdraft fees because I wasn’t keeping track of my money. Even now, from time to time, I will make a purchase and two seconds after leaving the store realize that I can’t recall what I just spent.

There are a lot more money tips that I learned in college and every so often I will pepper this topic in between my other posts. I would welcome insight about your money tips you learned in college.

I’ve decided that one of my New Years Money Resolutions is going to be to “Buy with Cash Only”. It’s going to be tough but it will be worth it in the long run.

On a side note, this Christmas is the first Christmas that I can remember where I have paid for every gift using cash. I didn’t use a single credit card (I’m certain they are all crying and wondering why I have turned a cold shoulder to them). I was able to keep my expenses down (although not as low as I had hoped). It is a small accomplishment but one that I am very happy about.

Well, I’m off to put on my apron and start cooking for Christmas. I have a few things to grab from the store, but I lucked out and I am home for the day
so I’m going to go brave the supermarket and see what’s 50% off.

I hope everyone out there has a blessed and beautiful holiday.
