I have a confession. Until two days ago, I’d never had an iced coffee. Before pregnancy changed my taste buds I rarely had coffee but now I am a COFFEE ADDICT. My cup of choice is decaf espresso + heavy whipping cream + a few sprinkles of cinnamon steaming hot. I ♥ Starbucks because I have always gotten my drink of choice with nary a raised eyebrow and I love their dark roast. I was pretty excited to shake things up when I received some Starbucks Via ® Ready Brew Iced Coffee to review.
I think we’ve all learned the lesson that it’s devilishly hard to make something dissolve in cold water so I was skeptical. I figured why not put it to the test of dissolving it in arctic cold water with ice. I took 16 ounces of water and set it in the freezer for 20 minutes, removed it and then added ice. Finally I emptied a packet of Iced Coffee and stirred and like magic it dissolved instantly.
When you open a packet the heady smell of coffee hits you immediately. I did check the ingredients list first when I got the coffee and due to my low sugar diet I wasn’t too excited that there are 22 grams of sugar in one serving. This is more sugar than I would typically drink nonetheless eat. I do love that you don’t need a dictionary to understand what makes up this brew and that they use cane sugar.
Saying all that, when I took my first sip I got the lovely bouquet of dark roast coffee not sugar so I was surprised. I was expecting it to be sugary sweetness. Mr. Bejelly loved it and starting adding heavy whipping cream to his cup immediately. The Caramel Flavor is a tad sweeter but again, rich dark coffee notes played a melody on my taste buds with Caramel finishes.
This is a great product for the on the go coffee drinker because it’s simple, quick and tastes great. If you’re following a Paleo, Sugar-free or Low Carb it would make a good Blue Moon cheat. Mr. Bejelly isn’t as strict about sugar as I am and he has already gone through a box.
