Bacon is a food group in itself in our household so you can imagine how I jumped at the chance (fork in hand) to review Skillet Street Food’s Skillet Bacon Jam. Skillet Street Food is a company born in Seattle by Chef Josh Henderson in 2007.
When I got the package in the mail, I tore it open and quickly had my first spoonful (yeah, I’m that kind of girl) and my first impulse was to hide the evidence and lie to my husband telling him that it never came. Seriously.
Bacon Jam is a condiment made from a combination of Nieman Ranch bacon, onions, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, salt and pepper that is slow cooked for several hours. I love that I know what each of these ingredients is and I don’t have to look up some 20 letter word that looks vaguely like English. Upon first bite, It’s hard to miss the smokiness of the bacon but the tang of the balsamic vinegar which is tempered by the brown sugar is what makes this work for me.
I immediately started thinking of how I could use this as an ingredient in a meal. My first thoughts were to whisk it into a salad dressing made with olive oil, Dijon mustard and honey and then pair it with some caramelized onions and Parmesan in a spinach salad. Next I thought maybe to spread it on some sourdough with sharp cheddar to kick up your standard grilled cheese. The product seems pretty versatile in how you can use it or you can be like me and eat it out of the jar.
